TBC May Book Club Meet Up

Event: TBC May Book Club Meetup

Location: Kenya National Theatre

Time: 10:00am – 12noon

Admission: Free

The Text Book Center Nairobi has monthly book club meetings where the book shop selects books to be read in a month and gathers the book worms every second week of the month to discuss the book.

The monthly meet-ups are usually held at the Kenya National Theater and what’s more interesting is that you get to purchase the book of the month at a 10% discount!!  How considerate huh?

I’ve had a pleasure of attending couple of their meet-ups to which I can attest to the great effort the bookshop has put in place to promote the reading culture.

In the month of April, the TBC Book Club selected Dinaw Mengestu as the months read and the discussion will be taking place come May, 13th 2017. So if you’re in Nairobi, be sure to grab a copy from one of their stores or purchase online here, save the date and show up for the discussion. Better yet, if you haven’t read the book no worries you are still welcome and encouraged to show up for the discussion and get to see how the discussions are conducted and who knows, this might just be the perfect book club for you!

You can sign-up for the book club here.

Book Description

Jonas, hash from a failed marriage to Angela, is desperate to make sense of the ties that have forged him. How can he dream of a future when he can’t make sense of his past? He hits the road, tracing the route that his parents —young Ethiopians in search of an identity as an American couple—took thirty years earlier to Nashville, Tennessee. Ina stunning display of imagination, he weaves together a family history that takes him from the war-torn Ethiopia of his parents’ youth to a brighter vision of his own life in contemporary America, a story — real or invented—that holds the possibility of reconciliation and redemption.
